[ Community Engagement ]

On this weeks blog, we catch up with Catharine Parker-Littler who co ordinates the community engagement initiatives here at Redeemer.

Since the first week of April, at the start of Lockdown, Redeemer Church partnered with the PIE Club, (Park Lifers in Exile,) supporting elderly and vulnerable people in isolation throughout the city from PL1 to PL9. Over 700 people were referred for support and a similar amount of people volunteered to assist with shopping, pharmacy and welfare calls. In May 2020, we realised from our welfare calls that this vulnerable group of isolated people were eating very little, for example warming a tin of soup for lunch, so in faith we moved to provide nutritious meals delivered direct to their door twice per week. By June 2020 we were producing and delivering up to 500 FREE 2 course meals twice per week. Volunteers turned up in droves to deliver these meals across all Plymouth postcode areas.  PIE Club relied heavily on donations and some grants. Redeemer Church family have contributed financially and also several from church volunteered their time to help out in whatever way they could.  Since August 75% our volunteers including drivers have returned to work and many of our supported clients are slowly returning to going outdoors, shopping, cooking.

During this period of Covid recovery we are in the process of developing a sustainable strategy which includes people making a small financial contribution towards meals and we will look to get funding to make up the full costs.  The Vision – maybe to provide the elderly and vulnerable of Plymouth with a wrap-around service which includes a type of Meals on Wheels and Support service.  We are still very short of driver volunteers and continue to call anyone with an interest  in serving our local community –especially delivering Sunday lunches. Please do contact me if you are able to help.

Earlier this year we were so thrilled to be able to partner with Vineyard Church for this exciting new venture. The nature of the project involved gathering a team of volunteers from Vineyard and Redeemer to prepare, develop and launch the Uniform Store on 17th July 2020. Amazingly God, with the help of Plymouth City Council provided a wonderful shop location on New George Street in the centre of Plymouth.  Parents from across the city donated new or very good quality uniforms.  Our team sorted, washed, ironed and hung thousands of uniforms and in 1 day alone provided 400 pieces of uniform for families.  Our team showed up over 3 days each week and additional times at weekend when required. Not long following the shop launch an online ‘Click and Collect’ service was launched.  In just over a 6 weeks period several thousand items of uniforms have been provided free to families for children 5-16 years old.

Although the shop has now closed, we are continuing to meet as a team to explore ways we can continue to provide this vital ministry. We are meeting as a team to celebrate and thank The Lord for all He has done through His people in such a short time – a miracle indeed.   If you think you would like to be involved in this new venture – please get in touch today.

As a church we have felt it important that we engage directly with our local community to explore how they feel we, as a church family can best serve since our church building lies within the heart of a local community.  To facilitate capturing of the communities thoughts and opinions we have developed a simple offline and online survey inviting our local community to complete our  ‘TELL US WHAT YOU THINK’ survey.  So our survey team are now engaging with local individuals and families (respecting Gov. Health Guidelines) including chatting with people in the parks, door to door surveys and invitations to coffee catch ups all in an effort to start building relationships within our local community.  We would love for you to get involved and join our team.
