[ New Students Heading To Plymouth ]

Today we’re delighted to have a guest blogger on our page! Steph started uni in Plymouth last year and today shares some of her story and encouragements for new students heading to Plymouth ready for the new academic year. Steph also write her own blog and has just started her own YouTube channel, UNI101 .

Hiya! Hope you’re all doing well!

With results day out of the way I’m sure you’ve all figured out which university you want to go to in September! Just a little more to go and I’m back in the grind with my degree too! Honestly, after lockdown, I am truly looking forward to some real things to be given to do!

I’m sure we’re all aware that life as we know it at uni is about to change for all students and as a member of the UPCU (University of Plymouth Christian Union) committee and a member of Redeemer church, our aim is to make everyone feel as welcome and have as close to a normal experience as possible. And if you are coming to us in September, we’re very much looking forward to seeing you! We have tons planned for you and we hope your first steps into an independent life are as smooth as they can be! Just as a quick warning: it won’t be as it usually is. And to be honest, I don’t know exactly how it’s going to turn out either. It’s a grey area for all of us. But I can assume most of our activities will be outside and if we have indoor stuff it will be in smaller groups. Feel free to bring a mask if it makes you feel safer! Furthermore, we’re told that if churches do open, we’ll not be allowed to sing during worship which is so sad but I’m sure we’ll find a way around it! Words’ out that we will be holding services at the Redeemer building, which is super exciting, but they’ll be shorter to give you guys a chance to interact but to also keep each other safe.

The whole idea of “faith at uni” can be difficult. You’ve moved into university, everything is new around you, you don’t know who to approach, who to ask what or even what to do next! As a fresher last year, that’s exactly how I felt. It’s a big change and adapting quickly is key to a smooth transition.
To be completely honest, I wasn’t very strong in my own faith when I started uni last year (in the past, my faith relied a lot on my parents’). But I’ve been told by my home church and heaps of other friends that getting involved within the CU is one of the first and most important things you must do. So, I’m here to pass it on. Top tip for university: Get involved into the CU! They are the root of the tree for uni students. As well as welcoming you into the university, planning all sorts of amazing activities for you to get to know the uni, the town and each other we also host “church surfs” where we take students to all sorts of churches around Plymouth and let you decide which church God is calling you to!

And if you’re reading this as a person who’s new to Christianity: no problem! We welcome you no matter what your background and are more than keen to know your story! As a CU we like to head down to the pub after every meeting and just chat and get to know each other better. And as students at Redeemer Church, we make so many spontaneous plans after the service to hang out and get to know one another better! Once, we didn’t get rid of each other till midnight! The members mingled so well with the freshers and I guarantee you’ll feel at home as a student here.

God has such an adventure planned for you at university! Filled and overflowing with blessings and challenges, happiness and sadness. I know for sure it won’t be perfect. But no matter what you’ll be faced with at uni, just know that God’s looking out for you. Follow what His plan is for you and you won’t be disappointed. A year on and I can confidently say I now have my own faith which is growing stronger every day. I have changed so much and in just 5 months! (shorter cause Covid). I can’t wait to see what God has in store for me next and I can’t wait to see all you guys and the plans God has for you in your life.
Looking forward to seeing you all in September! Can’t wait to get to know you! See you soon! xx
